To switch to a new BlackBerry device and restore the data from a backup file:- Back up the data from the old BlackBerry device.
- Load data to the new BlackBerry device.
- Switch your email account to the new BlackBerry device.
Task 1 - Back Up the Old BlackBerry device
To back up the data from the BlackBerry device:
- Connect the BlackBerry device to your personal computer.
- Use Backup and Restore to back up the data. This will create an.ipd file. For instructions, see the topicBack up handheld information in the Desktop Manager Online Help.
- Disconnect the BlackBerry device.
Task 2 - Load Data to the New BlackBerry device
To load the data from the
.ipd file to the new BlackBerry device:
- Remove the SIM card from your old BlackBerry device and insert it into the new BlackBerry device. For instructions, see “Setting up your handheld” in the Getting Started Guide.
- Connect the new BlackBerry device to your personal computer.
- When prompted to switch your email account to the connected BlackBerry device, click No. Note: If you switch your email account now, the BlackBerry device will encounter an error when you attempt to restore data to the BlackBerry device from the backup file.
- If the new BlackBerry device had a previous owner, clear all the data on the BlackBerry device. For instructions, see “Type an Incorrect Password in Application Loader” in KB-02318.
- In Desktop Manager, use Backup and Restore to restore the data from the .ipd file to your new BlackBerry device. For instructions, see the topic Restore handheld information in the Desktop Manager Online Help.
- Once the data has been restored, disconnect the BlackBerry device.
Task 3 - Switch Email Account to New BlackBerry device
To switch your email account to the new BlackBerry device:
- Reconnect your new BlackBerry device to your personal computer.
- When prompted to switch your email account to the connected BlackBerry device, click Yes.
- If prompted to update the BlackBerry Device Software, follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted to generate a new encryption key, click OK, then move your mouse in a random motion until the Generating New Key dialog box closes.
